With the “Climax Avalanches” on Snoqualamie Pass,do you think there will be a “Lahar Flow” off Mt. Rainier?
According to the USGS a ‘Climax Avalanche" is very rare, and is when a snow avalanche is so deep and powerful that ALL the snow down to the bare ground goes down in a tremendous slide. There have been several already today at the ski area at Snoqualamie Pass. Never happened before.
Why wouldn’t the same thing be about to happen on Mt. Rainier? If I lived in Orting, I’d be outta there !
If there ever were the unique extreme conditions to create such a disaster, this could be it. Will the ‘authorities’ see the real danger that is growing on the mt.? If the conditions are ripe for "Climax Avalanches", the rain has been heavier on Mt Rainier. There has been a record level of snowfall,Spokane has gotten more than SIX FEET just in the past 3 weeks ! Now they can expect record warm temps, and a half a foot of RAIN !

The scenario you mention likely WILL happen at Mt. Rainier–it’s just a matter of WHEN. Like you, I would not choose to live in Orting. (I don’t even want to drive through the place, what with the potential danger they face.)
