Ankle swelling,pain post skiing?
Ok, so I went skiing 2 1/2 wks ago (and fell a million times) and think i just sprained my ankle. I really twisted it pretty good and had a lot of pain post fall but it isn’t that severe anymore. It’s still hurting and swells when im limping around. I did the initial R.I.C.E tx and im still wrapping it and trying to rest it but the moment i get up the swelling comes back. I can walk around ok I just have a little limp with ankle swelling but really feel it if i push on the area, move in a twisting motion or even trying to push off with that foot real hard is difficult and crouching down really makes it yell. I cant run it hurts to much and that’s putting a damper on the 5K training i was in the middle of. I’m debating on talking to some of my friends who are dr’s and getting xrays (which isn’t really a problem since i work in a radiology dept) but i prefer not to have the radiation if i don’t need it (i get enough at work). It will be 3 wks soon and i really am trying to avoid going to the dr unless i really have to. im a dumbass i know but im trying to decide what im gonna do (whether to go talk to my dr friends or not, i dont want to be a hypocondriac which is really easy when you work in my field). Do ya think its just a really good sprain or maybe something more? I just dont want to jack myself up more by ignoring something that i shouldnt have. Any thoughts? I’m just looking for some advice. Thanks!

You should probably get an MRI instead of an x-ray. Sounds like you could have damaged a ligament. If your ankle "rolled" to the inside then you probably injured your anterior talofibular ligament. This is the most common. You probably have a bad Grade 1 or maybe a Grade 2 sprain. This means that you stretched and possibly tore part of a ligament. You could also have some anterior (bone) bruising. I would recommend talking to an orthopedic doctor. He/She will be able to do you the most good. Try an anti inflammatory like celebrex. If you can’t get any of that just take some alieve or ibuprofen. A good brace should help when you have to be on it. You can usually find a good one at Academy. Good luck.
If it is sprained, move it around a lot and it should get better soon. But still go to the doctor just in case.
