What kind of Mountain Bike will support an athletic 230 lb man?
I am a big man, but athletic. Skiing, Jogging, Swimming, etc. I want a bike to ride with my daughter who is old enough to ride a two-wheel, but may want to use for exercise occasionally, and maybe even some desert trails. I would like to stay under 0, but all suggestions would be appreciated.

You will have no problem with weight on a mountain bike or any bike for that matter. You will have to spend a little more money for a new bike from a shop. Getting the correct size frame is the most important thing you can do, Walmart Ind other department store bikes come in one size and are poor quality with no service.
Look at Giant, Specialized, Fuji, Raleigh, Trek, Jamis, GT, and a few others.
230 lbs might make you a "Clydesdale" but that’s not that heavy. Even most road bikes will be able to hold your weight reliably. If you want quality, make sure you buy it from a bike shop.
Most any will work, but I would stay away from bikes sold at Walmart, Target, or KMart as those bikes will not last very long. $300 is not much to spend on something you want to be comfortable on. You may be best off looking on Craigslist in your area for used bikes that originally came from a bike shop.
